2016 is the International year of the pulses. Every month Nurture The Future will post a new recipe that includes pulses. Although January is almost over already (I can't believe it!) Here is the first recipe to kick off the new year. Another bonus- it's for the slow cooker! Throw everything in and that's it.

1 cup        Dried beans (pinto, navy, black, chickpeas), rinsed
1/2 cup     Brown rice
6 cups       Vegetable stock
1 can         Tomato sauce
1/2 cup     Spinach, diced
1/2            Zucchini, diced
2                Carrots, diced
1/2 cup      Green beans, diced
1/2 cup      Corn
2                Celery stalks, diced
1/2            Onion, diced
3                Garlic cloves, minced
2 tsp          Italian seasoning
2 tsp          Black pepper
1 tsp          Herbamare

1. Chop vegetables.
2. Rinse beans.
3. Add everything to slow cooker. Cook on high for 4-6 hours.

Nausea

Feeling queasy or nauseous? You’re not alone. It is estimated that 70-80% of all pregnant women are affected by nausea at some point in their pregnancy (1). This is not to be confused with something called hyperemesis gravidarum. This is a very severe form of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy that leads to weight loss, nutrient deficiencies, fluid, electrolyte and acid-base imbalance (1).

For those of you suffering from nausea, here are some tips that may help you cope.
  • Eat smaller meals
  • Avoid going long periods between eating, skipping meals can make it worse
  • If smells are bothering you, get someone else to cook if possible
  • For some people cold foods are better
  • Bland foods like plain crackers or dry toast can help some people
  • Avoid stress as much as possible
  • Try ginger- you can make ginger tea from fresh ginger and hot water, you can also get ginger supplements
  • Avoid strong odours (ie/ smoking)

If you try the above suggestions and you find that you are still bothered, don’t give up! I would recommend talking to a Registered Dietitian (like me!) who can go through your diet to look for patterns and other things that may be making the nausea worse, or help you deal with it.
